Description
This authentic Colt Single Action Army Revolver, manufactured in 1881 and verified by the Colt Archives Factory Letter, represents a genuine piece of the Old West era. According to factory records, it was one of fifty revolvers shipped to the firm of Wexell & DeGress on December 29, 1881, in .44/40 caliber with a blue finish. Wexell & DeGress operated in Mexico City, Mexico, and New York, supplying frontier and export markets with high-demand Colt revolvers during the height of the cowboy era.
The revolver now features a nickel refinish with a shortened 4 ¾-inch barrel, later replacement Colt eagle pattern grips, and an included J.C. Higgins black leather holster—a period-style companion suitable for display or preservation. Frame markings remain visible beneath the patina, showing the classic three-line patent legend, while the bore retains visible rifling with expected oxidation for its age.
Mechanically, this revolver requires some attention, but as a verified antique Colt SAA with factory documentation, it represents a solid collector’s piece. The included Colt factory authentication letter (dated March 8, 2023) confirms its 19th-century origin, shipment date, and historical lineage—an invaluable addition for serious Colt enthusiasts.
